Determining the correct amount of steel fiber for concrete is key to achieving the desired reinforcement effect. This guide explains the basics of steel fiber dosage calculation and how different applications demand different fiber volumes.

What Is the Dosage of Steel Fibers?

Steel fiber dosage refers to the mass of fibers per cubic meter of concrete, typically expressed as kg/m³. It determines how much reinforcement is present throughout the matrix and directly influences performance such as crack control and toughness.

Factors Affecting Steel Fiber Dosage Calculation

Key considerations include:

· Intended application (flooring, shotcrete, UHPC)

· Required performance (flexural toughness, residual strength)

· Concrete slump and aggregate grading

· Type and geometry of fiber (e.g. hooked-end, micro)

These affect dispersion, bonding, and fiber effectiveness.

Typical Steel Fiber Dosage Ranges

· Industrial floors: 20–30 kg/m³

· Tunnel shotcrete: 25–35 kg/m³

· UHPC: 150–314 kg/m³ (with micro steel fibers)

PIONEER® recommends starting from 25 kg/m³ for standard SFRC and adjusting based on test results.

Practical Example of Steel Fiber Dosage Calculation

For a 10 m³ concrete pour using 30 kg/m³ dosage:

Total fiber required = 30 × 10 = 300 kg

Always use pre-weighed fiber packs to reduce dosing errors on site.
