ASTM C1609 vs EN 14651: Why the Results Differ

ASTM C1609 vs EN 14651 is not a comparison of two interchangeable report formats. Both address flexural behavior of fiber-reinforced concrete, but their specimen preparation, loading arrangements, control parameters and reported values differ.


ASTM C1609 vs EN 14651 Test Outputs

ASTM C1609/C1609M uses a beam under third-point loading and reports flexural performance at defined deflections. EN 14651 uses a notched beam and reports limit-of-proportionality and residual flexural tensile strengths at defined crack mouth opening displacements.


Because the methods measure and express behavior differently, a value from one method should not be relabeled as a result from the other. Any correlation requires a recognized basis accepted for the design.

Choose the Method from the Design Framework

The governing code, specification and calculation method should determine the required test. Reports must identify fiber product, dosage, concrete properties, specimen size, curing, age, individual results and deviations.


Review the Macro Synthetic Fibers or Steel Fibers categories when the project requires post-crack performance.


Final design values must be approved by the responsible engineer. Product tensile strength or an isolated beam result cannot replace the required statistical and design evaluation.
