The key question in AR glass fiber vs E-glass selection is not simply which fiber is stronger. It is whether the glass composition and product design are appropriate for long-term exposure to an alkaline cementitious environment.


Conventional E-glass is widely used in composite materials, but it should not automatically be specified for GFRC, concrete, or mortar. Alkali-resistant glass fiber is specifically produced for applications where resistance to cement alkalinity is required.

Fresh and hardened cementitious materials create an alkaline environment. Glass fibers exposed to this environment may experience changes that depend on:


Glass composition


Zirconia content


Fiber sizing


Fiber dimensions


Matrix chemistry


Moisture and temperature


Exposure duration


The label “glass fiber” alone does not demonstrate suitability for a cement-based application.


ASTM C1666/C1666M provides a specification for alkali-resistant glass fiber used in GFRC and fiber-reinforced concrete and cement. It should not be interpreted as certification of a specific product unless corresponding conformity documentation is available.


What Should Buyers Verify?

Before selecting a glass fiber for GFRC or mortar, request:


Current technical data sheet


Fiber composition or declared zirconia content


Applicable test or conformity documentation


Fiber length and filament diameter


Sizing compatibility


Recommended addition rate


Mixing and handling guidance


Finished-system test results, where required


Do not use individual filament tensile strength as proof of finished GFRC or mortar performance.
