Compare Fiber Forms, Applications and Performance Requirements

PIONEER®  Synthetic Macrofiber Introduction

Macro synthetic fibers are engineered polymer fibers used to improve post-crack performance, toughness, and crack control in concrete. PIONEER® offers monofilament, twisted, embossed, and macro–micro blended options for floors, pavements, shotcrete, precast elements, and infrastructure applications. Choose a fiber by required residual performance, application, mixing and finishing needs, and the project’s design standard.

Use this page to compare the range, then open the Rimix™ 3D or HTM® product page for technical specifications, dosage guidance, and project support.

Smarter concrete reinforcement solutions.
Why macro synthetic fiber is replacing welded wire reinforcement in modern slabs.

Compare Macro Synthetic Fiber Options

Macro synthetic fibers should not be selected by product name or dosage alone. Fiber geometry, material, length, bond behavior, mixing conditions, and the required residual performance all influence suitability. Use the comparison below to narrow the product family. Final selection should be confirmed against the project specification, concrete mix, test method, and available product evidence.

How to Choose the Right Macro Synthetic Fiber

Start with the required concrete performance, not the fiber shape or a generic dosage. The correct product depends on the specified test method , application, concrete mix, placing process, finishing requirements, and approval conditions.

1. Required Post-Crack Performance

Confirm whether the project specifies residual flexural strength, toughness, energy absorption, or another post-crack criterion. Compare products using results from the required test method and clearly documented concrete conditions. Do not assume that the same fiber dosage will provide the same result in different mixes or element designs.

2. Application and Loading

Identify whether the fiber will be used in an industrial floor, slab-on-ground, pavement, shotcrete lining, tunnel, precast element, or another application. Loading, section design, joint strategy, exposure, placing method, and finishing requirements can change which product and dosage should be evaluated.

3. Fiber Geometry and Bond

Monofilament, twisted, embossed, and blended fibers interact differently with the cement matrix. Geometry can influence anchorage, pull-out behavior, distribution, and finishability. Compare verified test results rather than choosing a product only by tensile strength, fiber length, or appearance.

4. Mixing and Finishability

Review the batch plant, mixing sequence, pumpability, placing method, surface finish, and site handling requirements. A fiber that meets the required laboratory performance must also disperse consistently and remain practical under the project’s production and construction conditions.

5. Evidence and Approval

Request the technical data sheet, safety data sheet, applicable certificate, dosage used, concrete mix, and measured results. Any proposal to replace steel fiber or welded wire reinforcement should be reviewed through the project’s structural or performance-based design process.

Choose a Macro Synthetic Fiber by Application

  • Industrial Floors and Slabs-on-Ground

For industrial floors and slabs-on-ground, review the slab thickness, joint strategy, loading, subgrade conditions, and finish requirements. Rimix™ 3D or an HTM® product may be evaluated, but the final selection and dosage should be supported by the project design and relevant test data.

  • Shotcrete and Tunnel Linings

For shotcrete and tunnel applications, assess pumpability, rebound, fiber distribution, energy absorption, and the required performance test.

  • Pavements and Infrastructure

For pavements and infrastructure, consider repeated loading, exposure conditions, joint design, construction method, maintenance objectives, and the applicable specification. Use performance claims only where the relevant product, dosage, mix, and test conditions are documented.

  • Precast Concrete

For precast elements, review mixing, mold filling, surface finish, handling loads, production cycle, and the required post-crack performance. Confirm that the selected product is compatible with the plant process and that the reported test data represents the offered fiber grade.

Macro Synthetic Fibers vs Micro Synthetic Fibers

Macro synthetic fibers are generally evaluated for toughness and post-crack performance in hardened concrete. Micro synthetic fibers are primarily selected for early-age plastic shrinkage control or other product-specific functions. They are not automatically interchangeable. Where a project requires both early-age crack control and post-crack performance, a verified macro–micro blend may be considered.

Need Help Selecting a Macro Synthetic Fiber?

Send us the application, element dimensions, concrete strength, loading or exposure requirements, required test method, and target performance. We will identify the most relevant PIONEER® product and provide the available technical data, dosage range, and supporting documents for engineering review.

In real projects, this often results in insufficient post-crack strength, uneven performance, difficult finishing, and higher dosage just to meet basic requirements.

With lower tensile strength and a relatively smooth surface, conventional macro fibers provide limited anchorage and weak crack-bridging ability after cracking.

How Rimix™ 3D Improves Macro Fiber Performance

Rimix™ 3D is a high-performance upgrade to conventional macro fiber, engineered with advanced PP–PE composite materials.

It delivers higher tensile strength and modulus, allowing better load transfer across cracks and more stable post-crack performance.

Its optimized fiber geometry enhances bonding and pull-out resistance, while ensuring excellent dispersion without balling—making mixing and finishing easier on site.

Compared to standard macro fiber, Rimix™ 3D achieves stronger reinforcement with lower dosage, improving both performance and cost efficiency.

Upgrade Fiber Performance — Not Just Dosage

Simply adding more fiber does not always solve performance issues. The key is upgrading the material quality and structural performance of the fiber itself.

Rimix™ 3D provides higher efficiency per kilogram, helping achieve better crack control, improved workability, and more consistent concrete performance across different applications.

FAQ

  • Macro synthetic fibers are engineered polymer fibers used in concrete to improve toughness, crack bridging, and post-crack performance. Their suitability depends on fiber geometry, dosage, concrete mix, test method, application, and project design.

  • Start with the required residual performance and application. Then compare fiber geometry, mixing and finishing requirements, dosage, and available test evidence. Final selection should follow the project specification and engineering review.

  • Macro synthetic fibers may be considered as an alternative to steel fibers or welded wire reinforcement in applications where the project design, required test results, and local approval support the substitution. Suitability depends on the concrete element, loading, concrete mix, dosage, exposure conditions, and specified performance. Share the project requirements with our technical team for a documented product and dosage review.

  • There is no universal dosage. The correct dosage depends on the product, concrete mix, element design, test method, and target performance. Use product-specific test data and project design rather than a generic kilograms-per-cubic-meter value.

  • Macro synthetic fibers are generally evaluated for toughness and post-crack performance. Micro synthetic fibers are primarily used for early-age crack control or other product-specific functions. They should not be treated as interchangeable products.
